Charlotte, a young military widow, decides to move North to the Scottish Border Hills, in search of a new life, some independence, and hopefully, a new love. She meets David, and after several months they find that they are mutually attracted and they merge together in a surreal relationship.
By some bizarre twists, Charlotte emulates the Scots’ ability to blend barley and water, by distilling David into a perfect unique blend of master and servant, and by turning shackles into the instruments of her release. As a couple, S&M becomes as every day as its anagram, creating an element of bubbling excitement and sexual anticipation, to join the other blessings in their shopping basket of life.

Scottish Independence The Quest for Freedom Scottish Independence edition by Florence May Literature Fiction eBooks

When I first read the prologue I thought OMG what have I started reading??!! Then I moved on to the first chapter. The story is about Charlotte - a young widow trying to rebuild her life after the loss of her husband. She moves to Scotland where she finds David. Charlotte then orchestrates her own downfall. David takes Charlotte's instruction and quickly becomes her master. While the book does have bondage scenes, they don't over dominate the book and the author has focused more on character development and plot, making a thoroughly enjoyable read. This book is told from a multiple perspective angle - and it is the first I've ever found that works well, and actually enhances the story. And - kudos to the author - as this is a very hard format to write in, without the book becoming clunky and unreadable. This story flowed effortlessly regardless of who was telling the story. I found this book funny, heartwarming with just a touch of spice, to make things nice. A wonderful read from this new author and I look forward to the next book.

Scottish Independence The Quest for Freedom Scottish Independence edition by Florence May Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Quest for Freedom is Florence May’s debut novella. It is approx. 115 pages long and follows the relationship between Charlotte and David.

Charlotte is a young widow having lost her military husband while he was on deployment. After 4 years of grieving her loss, it is time for Charlotte to start living, she packs up and moves, starts a new life in a new home. Makes new friends and connections which means she crosses paths with David.

While their mutual attraction is evident and their relationship starts to slowly blossom, Charlotte who is a woman who knows her own mind, sets a plan in motion to ensure that David meets her needs in the way she decides.

Florence May writes with a hint of old world charm. Her descriptions are detailed which creates a picturesque and vivid tone for the reader. The concept of this story is sound, and I suspect as the story unravels, it will bring this more fully to life. The characters have a depth about them, that 100+ pages doesn’t really let you truly get a grasp on.

This is, I guess an erotic novella. It has BDSM themes, and essentially unpacks the power dynamic in a D/s relationship, even if it is not a stereotypically traditional one.

Unfortunately though, I struggled with reading this story. Early in the story, I found it challenging to follow the tense. Was it current tense or past tense? At times I truly did not know. When Charlotte was reflecting on her life with Hugo (her husband) it appeared to be written in the first person which confused me as to whether we had gone back in time, or it was still a reflection. I also found the language old school, which made me unsure of which era the book was set in, particularly given the focus on details about Charlotte’s fashion and inspirations. Consider my surprise when I was reading the story thinking it was set in the late 60’s early 70’s but later realised it was a current day story! Now this could have been my association with the language, rather than any erring on the part of the author, but it added to my confusion.

The story was told in dual perspective at times. Mostly it was Charlotte’s story, but at times David got a say – and then there were random chapters (which were not random at all but significant moments in the story) that were told by ‘an observer’. This third perspective threw me, as those key moments were still told in a first person verbatim dialogue, rather than a third person narrative. My simple mind also thought – gee at those moments, there was an observer? Creepy!

As I said, this novella would sit in the erotic genre due to the themes explored. That said there was not extensive sexual activity in this book – it mainly focused on one significant event, but the sexual tension and innuendo was a driving factor of the story.

My last issue sits with the prologue. This confused me to no end. It introduces us to a Master/sub relationship with some extremely complex designs for pleasure.. but the nature of the relationships didn’t draw me to the conclusion that the prologue is where the relationship between Charlotte and David will end up.. I guess I need to wait to see the next installments to see how the prologue fits the story.

This was not a bad story, but structurally it lacked for me. With some work and fine tuning I suspect that Florence May will master the art of erotic story telling.

I am rating this a high 2 ½ hearts, I look forward to watching this author and story grow.
